Whether you are a first time homeowner or have had a couple of them, there is nothing like having your own house. It is a place where you can do virtually whatever you want and customize it in so many ways. Of course, the downside to homeownership is keeping up on all of the things that can go wrong or deteriorate over time. The longer you own a house, the more you start to notice signs that it may be time for a home remodel. There are several signs that can point in this direction and we have included five of them below.

Old or Worn Down Floors

The floors of a house can definitely take a lot of abuse. Between being walked on all the time, kids jumping around, and dropping things on them, floors take a lot. Unfortunately, this means you can begin to see the wear and tear pretty easily over time. If your carpet is flattened when it used to be soft and fluffy, or there are multiple stains, it may be time to replace it. Or, if your wood floors have a lot of dents and scrapes, it may be time to replace or refinish them. On the bright side, replacing flooring can have an excellent return on investment when you sell your home.

Familial Changes and Shifts

The most beautiful part about a home is that it can see years of a family’s evolution and these various phases can be times for a good remodel as well. For instance, if you are having your first or another child and are lacking space, perhaps it is time to look into an addition or breaking down a wall to expand a room. Or, if your children are grown and moving out, it might be time to take care of the wear and tear from years of raising children.

Considering Selling Your Home

One of the greatest times for a remodel is before selling your home. It may sound counterintuitive to put money into sprucing up your home when you are trying to move somewhere else, but this helps you add equity and resale value to your home. Many remodel jobs that you complete on your current home will have a great return when you actually sell it.

Blatant Signs of Deterioration

Of course, the obvious indication of the need for a remodel is visible signs of deterioration. These can be numerous, whether it be bubbling or chipping paint, peeled carpet or linoleum, broken siding, etc. These are all signs that the house has seen some days and has been lived in, which happens over time. It just means that it is time to start fixing these things up.

Outdated Fixtures

In some cases, a house has been around for a long time and many fixtures have become outdated. They may still work, but perhaps not as well as they used to or are lacking beneficial features of the modern day. There is nothing wrong with starting a remodel purely to update various fixtures and lighting. Not only does this add value to your home if you decide to sell, but it also helps to future proof your home for even longer.
